Sam Machell is an artist and writer currently based in Plymouth. He is interested in changing technologies, post-internet confusion, and the haunted landscapes of the South West. Drawing from across the wild wastes of Media: from the messy poetry of the Beats to contemporary video games: his work is restless and scattered, often anachronistic and deeply personal, reflecting what it means to live in a chaotic post-truth world…. His work has been exhibited internationally, and his writing has been published on sites such as Surfaces and Expat Press. Sam is also a member of Plymouth collective dOgMiLk, focused on providing a platform for young or unestablished artists.

Responding to the Summer’s program of residencies, Sam presents a rush of troubled stories from the perspectives of humans, non-humans, plants and spirits of the Rame Peninsula. From the perspective of a mythical three-headed beast, Chimera River, the narrative moves forwards and backwards through time and place. The stories weave together moments of nonsense, tragedy, and absurd personal confessions to simulate the complex interactions of ecosystems, asking us to look beyond the human for new forms of community, and new forms of hope.
